Cheap Wood Replacement Windows
Wooden replacement windows are the best available options when it comes to restoring the lost elegance of a house. The other available options like the aluminum and vinyl windows are never able to provide the classy finish that wooden windows can. To save up on costs, one may even want to match the new wooden windows to already existing ones or only replace the glass pane.
There are various types of windows available in the market – but the most popular ones are the single and double hung windows. Apart from these, there are the sliding windows, casement windows and awning windows. In case one is able to replace the old windows with wooden windows themselves, then one may even end up saving $100 per window. But one needs to be aware of waterproofing techniques for the new wooden windows.
But of course, even when one opts for professional help, one can always try to find some deals on bargains. It also helps to compare contractor costs before settling for one. When comparing, one must also take account of additional expenses that may crop up. These include labour costs or if there is the common problem of dry rot or other similar damages in the existing window, then the window replacement costs might even get higher. In case such a thing happens, one will have to spend extra money in treating the infected area before installing the new wooden window. If one installs the new window without treating the area, the problem will persist and the new wooden window will get damaged in not time. Moreover, if ones wooden window is not of the standard size and needs to be altered to fit the existing frame, there are high chances of the costs going up as well. So when one draws up a budget, one has to consider such extra expenses also.
It is best to go for a new wooden casement window that comes with a warranty even when it is not included in the windows selling price. Also, if one has windows that are energy efficient enough, one can get up to $1,500 of tax credit.
The Art of Comparing HVAC Systems
Every home owner is aware of the importance of a well operating system for their heating, ventilating and air conditioning needs (HVAC). When choosing a new or replacement HVAC system, it is important to compare a list of systems and take a range of factors into consideration before making a decision. The following steps will explain the factors to consider and help to make an informed decision when buying a HVAC system.
The first step is to determine the size of the house, in other words the area, or square footage, to be serviced by the system. If an old unit is to be replaced, the tonnage of this old unit should also be noted. These two figures will play an important role in the comparison of units. The next step is to select a list of five (or more, if so desired) different units, preferably from different manufacturers, to compare. These can be randomly selected from ads online, in catalogues or newspapers. Having done this, it is time to compare the units. The easiest way to do this is to create a 5 x 7 (if five units have been selected) grid and proceed by writing the name and manufacturer of each unit into the top five boxes, followed by writing these categories against the sides of the remaining six boxes: tonnage, SEER, AFUE, features/ equipment, price, energy incentives/ rebates, annual maintenance.
Tonnage is the measurement indicating the power of each unit (this is where the information prepared earlier comes in handy). Too low, and a unit will have to work too hard, too high and energy will be wasted. SEER and AFUE are efficiency ratings. SEER indicates the unit’s efficiency in converting electricity into cooling power, while AFUE shows the percentage of fuel actually converted into heat. The higher these numbers are the better. Once these and all other information – specific features of, or equipment supplied with, each unit; prices, possible rebates and whether an annual service is provided – have been entered, comparison can be made at a glance and the most suitable unit can be selected.
